Cosplay Wig Hacks: Tips to Stop Crowns & Hair Clips From Falling Off

Wearing hair accessories on a cosplay wig is a struggle: your crown starts to tilt, a hair clip slips right out, or a carefully placed hair pin pops off halfway through the Con. Cosplay wigs are mostly made of synthetic hair and don’t have the same grip as natural hair, which makes keeping accessories in place a real challenge.

The good news  is, I have some cosplay wig hacks to help you solve the problem.  In this article you’ll learn a few clever securing tricks that you can use to keep your look stable and magical all day long.

Why Hair Accessories Slip on Cosplay Wigs

Unlike natural hair, wig fibers are smooth and slick and don't have the same friction or grip which makes hair accessories slide easily. Wig caps also don’t provide much anchoring, so heavy crowns may tilt and heavy barrettes may weigh down the wig and cause it to slide.

This is why so many cosplayers search for how to secure accessories on cosplay wigs because Standard hair accessories aren’t designed for wigs by themselves; they need extra support.

What Makes an Accessory Wig-Friendly?

So what kind of attributes should I look for when selecting cosplay hair accessories that are wig-friendly?

Lightweight designs – Polymer clay, resin, or small beaded pieces are less likely to drag down a wig. Think feather-light polymer clay bind wire cosplay crowns, hair barrettes, beaded hair vines that you can weave into updos or braids and decorative bobby pins.

  • Secure claspsAlligator clips, hair combs, or hairbands will still work, but may need more assistance to stay in place with bobby pins or clear hair elastics.

  • Balanced comfort – Distributing weight evenly keeps accessories from tilting during long wear.

How to Secure French Barrettes on Cosplay Wigs

Hair barrettes are great for styling wigs. You can clip them into the wig’s wefts (the sewn lines of hair inside the cap) rather than just on the hair itself.

Tip: One of the easiest ways to fix clips on cosplay wigs is the bobby pin X-method. Use two bobby pins in the shape of an X underneath the wig along the horizontal wefts. Then when you attach the hair barrette, slide the clip underneath the bobby pin “X” and fasten.  This gives the clip more stability and less likely to slide down the hair.

My Dragon Claw Barrette and Raven Hair Barrette are lightweight enough to stay put while still adding dramatic flair.

How to Secure Crowns & Circlets on Cosplay Wigs

Crowns are showstoppers, but the biggest frustration for cosplayers is figuring out how to keep a crown from falling off a wig during a convention. Here are tips to  keep your crown or tiara secure all day long.

  • Wear a wig grip headband under your wig for added traction.

  • Use invisible elastic thread or fishing line to tie crowns discreetly in place.

  • Stitch tiny loops into the wig lining and slide the crown’s arms through for anchoring.

  • If using one of my lightweight cosplay circlets. Place and secure with the ribbon at the back. If necessary you can add a bobby pin “X” at the back of the tiara to pin the ribbon.

My Collections of cosplay crowns and circlets including the  Crystal Fairy Crown and Raven Skull Gothic Circlet are designed lightweight and adjustable - perfect for staying secure through conventions or photoshoots.

How to Keep Hair Sticks & Pins From Falling Out of Wigs

For wig updos, hair sticks are a fun decorative addition to a bun hairstyle. The trick is to them through wig buns or through loops rather than just resting them in the hair. This locks them in place and prevents slipping. If you want to see a step-by step tutorial on how to use a hair stick, check out this blog post: How to tie your hair with a hair stick.  My Forest Owl Hair Pin and Dragon Hair Stick are cosplay favorites because they add magical fantasy detail while staying practical.

Using Elastic Hair Ties on Cosplay Wigs

Elastic hair ties are the simplest wig-friendly accessory as they are rubber and have good grip. Texture and they'll stay secure without slipping. To add more drama to a boring hair elastic over the top you could use a decorative hair tie. This will add the perfect touch of fantasy fun to a high or low ponytail.  Check out my collection of decorative hair ties for inspiration.

Cosplayer Hacks to Keep Accessories Secure

Here are some other clever, unconventional wig accessory tricks to keep hair accessories from moving here are a few of them to try:

  • Hook and Loop tape trick – Sew or glue the hook side of the hook and loop tape (the scratchy side) to the underneath of the wig (the wefts) where you need to attach an accessory.  When using a clip the grip of the hooks gives friction to the hair clip preventing the dreaded slide.

  • Clear elastic thread or fishing line – Tie crowns invisibly for stage and photoshoots.

  • Hidden bobby pin X-method – As mentioned earlier this is a handy one to use for securing any hairpiece

  • Magnet hack –  A more advanced wig hack cosplayers can sew small magnets into wigs and attach to crowns for a snug, removable fit.

Smart Tips for Cosplay Wig Success

  • Always do a test run before the convention. You want to make sure your wig hair style is going to work and that all the decorative pieces stay in place. Give it a test drive: Wear it at home for some time leading up to your event to allow time for adjustments.

  • Balance accessories on both sides of the wig for comfort. Make sure crowns are balanced and that you feel comfortable and confident wearing your hair accessories on your wig.

  • Use multiple small pins instead of one heavy clip.

  • For heavier accessories, add stitched loops inside the wig lining.

  • For event day, bring a  small cosmetics container with wig glue plus a cotton swab to reapply to the wig if there is any slippage. Extra bobby pins are also a good idea.
